too pataphysically null: singed thumb a gaze over sleep of bluejeans, your groove exhonerated, empty of whitening trills. our future cranks through the tactcial fold of tongue present in the moment, reduced versions left to simmer in new ways. all ceremony, pomp, glittery humiliation as tangled whooshes upon my wings, the small implicit for free. a frying shirt talks of bones, delicate ragas nuance less than their clanging striations, parsed straight out of praxis to spin holons opening in night's waft. song of an elongated pool, garbage in armed struggle to think our cracked stitches into a memesis of sweat, geodesic sometimes but always grinning steamed smears of bitter vulva and cash.

just picked up a combined CD of captain beefheart and the magic bands.
"Clear Spot"
and
"The Spotlight Kid"
(I have the vinyl of Clear Spot as well)
fantastic music. one of the few artists (correct use of the term artist too) to have forged from other musics a totally unique creation all of his own. blues, acid rock, free form jazz and his utterly amazing lyrics.

PS. my personal favourite is "Doc at the Radar Station".

How about you?

Robert said...

really?

that surprises me, CJ

it's an album i came to appreciate more later on...i think a better album from that period was Ice Cream For Crow...more similar to the dada soul/blues of the earlier era

this is a harder question than youd think...i was gonna say Trout Mask because Dachau Blues was the first thing i heard from him, and it ripped my face off...and Moonlight On Vermont is one of my favourite songs ever...it has just wormed its way into my DNA/RNA...but i was also obsessed for a long time with Safe As Milk...i guess maybe because it showed me that you could be borped-out AND soulful...i mean, as off-kilter as his voice was, i will maintain that he is a GREAT blues/soul shouter, and if anyone doesnt believe me, check out that and Mirror Man (also to see what a great harmonica player he is)

also "Grown So Ugly" is an old fave, just as some of Zappa's irreverent doo-wop stuff is just GREAT to me, while for others it's just cheesy or silly

you know what?

i dunno

a part of me wants to say Mirror Man, just because of the extended jams and over-all blues-raga freakiness

Trout Mask Replica is a classic, obviously

i think perhaps Ice Cream For Crow...i think that is where everything that is great about him really came together...it's from his later years (around the same time as Radar Station, iam almost certain), but recaptures a lot of the grittiness and energy of Trout Mask, Lick My Decals Off and Mirror Man

i cant answer honestly...i obviously have leanings towards the earlier stuff, but then Ice Cream For Crow is just amazing, too, and that's from the later era

i think The Fall were into that album BIG-TIME

if i say Mirror Man, well large parts of that are instrumental and i just LOVE his voice

i dunno, and im kinda beery now, too :)

oh, i just wanted to say that even though i was surprised that you like At the Radar Station so much, it's a great album, too

i was just thinking youd have a different choice is all

or maybe ive just had too much to think :)

robert,

they are all all great albums. it is hard to choose one from another.

i too really like the early stuff. more blues driven and yes, trout mask is an obvious choice but you are right his last three albums, which include doc and ice cream are the icing on the cake.
